Matoaca, Elizabeth Davis and Salem Church have all advanced to quarterfinal play in the 2010 CCPS Middle School Basketball Tournament by virtue of first round victories last Thursday. They join the Falling Creek Panthers, who earned a first-round bye with their 11-1 regular season record.
“The only thing better than running club meeting once a week would be if we met twice a week,” exclaimed seventh grader Emily Johnson. Johnson is one of a gym-full of Chester Middle School students who meet each Wednesday during the winter months.
In a big-time game with a big-time atmosphere, Petersburg High School brought its No. 1 state ranking into the Dale gym and barely escaped with a 70-66 victory over the Knights.
In front of a spirited crowd, Thomas Dale improved its record to a perfect 11-0 with a 51-43 road victory versus district rival Meadowbrook.
The Chester Eagles continued their much-improved play last week with exciting victories over cross-town rivals Elizabeth Davis and Carver. The Eagles enter the last two weeks of the regular season with a 5-4 record.
Over the last nine years, the Chester YMCA Training Team has grown from about 20 members to nearly 300. An excited and experienced coaching staff greeted a record number of participants last Saturday morning at Thomas Dale, kicking off a 10-week program preparing runners and walkers of all skill levels for the Monument Avenue 10k.
