Good Guys in Sport: Ken Oxendine

Ken Oxendine was and is an ox. Starring on the gridiron at Thomas Dale, he went on to greatness at Virginia Tech and then enjoyed a career in the NFL. Always humble in his success, he has remained close to his Chester roots. Oxendine, along with his brother, works tirelessly with area youth in an attempt to develop their full potential as student athletes.

Matoaca soccer arises from the ashes

Six years ago Coach Corey McConville arrived to take the reins of the fledgling soccer program at Matoaca Middle School. The team’s history was not a good one, with winless seasons being the norm. McConville’s first Warrior team included 7th graders Dylan Prendergast, Mason Page, and Nathan Calhoun, three players that would give Matoaca a foretaste of things to come.

Area teams, athletes make a splash in the postseason

Matoaca’s baseball team and Dale’s girls’ soccer team both advanced to their respective state tournaments by virtue of reaching the finals in region play last week. Both teams will travel to meet Eastern Region champions in quarterfinal action.

Soccer team takes state cup with late goal

The United FC U12 girls Elite team completed its run at a Virginia State Cup Championship with an unbelievable 2-1 victory over Wags Division 1 powerhouse Ashburn in the final game, according to information from Coach Joe Farrell.

4-H Campers invites you for a game of golf

The Jamestown 4-H Educational Center is sponsoring a “Send A Kit to Camp” and “Keep the Campfires Burning” golf tournament. The tournament will take place at the Williamsburg National Golf Club – Jamestown course located at 3700 Centerville Road in Williamsburg on Friday, June 18, with a Captains Choice Tee off at 1 p.m.
