Skyhawks soar past Knights, Ervin sets school passing record

After a closely contested game to open the season between Thomas Dale and L.C. Bird in the Battle of Chester, a game that Bird won 14-7, the two teams circled their second match-up on the calendar. Bird was able to jump out early and dominate the Knights throughout and earn their fifth straight win in the series defeating Dale by a score of 42-3 last Friday night.

The lone score of the contest came in the third quarter as Matoaca running back Jordan Reyes ran for a 40-yard touchdown. A ceremony was held for assistant coach Richard Stegemerten who passed away last Monday after suffering a heart attack.

Area runners sprint for the finish in Chester Kiwanis 5K

The Chester Kiwanis held its first annual Chester Kiwanis 5K over the weekend, with Harrison Wood named the overall winner, finishing in 17:40. The race attracted about 150 runners to Linear Park from the region, and the race was a very successful event, according to president of the club, Thomas Sokol.

Monarchs come out firing, defeat Knights

The Meadowbrook Monarchs moved one step closer to achieving their goal of returning to the playoffs in beating Thomas Dale last Friday in Central District action 33-19. For the Monarchs, the Knights have been a tough test the past few seasons, as Thomas Dale had been responsible or partially responsible for knocking Meadowbrook out of the playoffs in both 2010 and 2011.

The Skyhawks continued their dominance of the Dominion District with another convincing victory. Monacan mustered just 78 yards of offense against a stout Bird defense, and quarterback Terrance Ervin set school records for completions (60) and passing yards in a season (912).

Skyhawk’s band finding success this year in competition

The L.C. Bird High School Skyhawk Band attended their second competition of the year and brought home two trophies. Band boosters agree that the band keeps getting better and better as the year goes on. They had an overall score of 84.5, just 0.5 from a Superior rating.
