Betty Burton was one of our unique personalities in Chester Village and will never be forgotten. She was a worker and a doer, there in the beginning when the community gathered and held events in the old Community Center on Lee Street.
As a member of the Woman’s Club of Chester she helped keep the community center going and was there when it came time to close it down. She was there to help start the Chester YMCA, she was there when the community decided we needed a Chester Village Plan, she was there in helping organize the Chester Community Association, and the Chesterfield Center for the Arts Foundation.
She volunteered at The Hermitage every Wednesday for thirty years and often for special events. She worked with the Ecumenical Council of Churches for many years before it ended, she helped provide lunches for a group of senior citizens every week until it disbanded. She was active in her homeowners association and had many Neighborhood Watch celebration parties in front of her house.
She was committed to her church, Chester United Methodist Church, and spent many hours and years working in and for it. She was the Arts Department Chairman, on the Christmas Mother Committee, worked on the Fashion Shows and Luncheons of the Woman’s Club of Chester and helped to get the street lights put up in Chester.
She was dedicated to her family, her church, her friends and her community. She touched so many lives, young and old, in so many ways and we are richer for her being with us.
