For the fourth year in a row, the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School debate team took first place in the statewide Virginia Catholic Forensic League tournament, which was held on Saturday, March 6.
“I’m glad for the team,” coach Dan Brown, a social studies teacher at Maggie Walker, says in a press release from Hal Waller. “They are all just incredible kids — both conscientious and hardworking.”
The tournament, which took place at Clover Hill High School, included three categories of debate: Student Congress, Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum, Waller’s release says.
Seven students on the team received individual awards: Maryam Patton, of Chesterfield — 1st Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Kimberly Quick, of Chesterfield — 2nd Place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Mitch Caudill, of Chesterfield, and Elsa Schultze, of Chesterfield — 1st Place in Public Forum; Kelsie Taylor, of Chesterfield, and Logan Ferrell, of Chesterfield — 2nd Place in Public Forum; and Dallen McNerney, of Powhatan — 5th Place in Student Congress.
