The friends and classmates of Devin Hawkins, a student at Carver Middle School who was tragically lost this spring, planted a memorial butterfly garden in his memory on June 11. This followed the reading of Priscilla Cumming’s novel, “Red Kayak,” in which survivors plant butterfly gardens as a memorial tribute to deceased children. Devin’s classmates wrote private messages and placed them in a memorial capsule that was planted in the garden.
During the 6th grade awards assembly, a slideshow presenting the memorial tribute was shown to students, parents, and faculty members. It was a truly meaningful tribute to a student who will be greatly missed.
Nancy Fontana, an English teacher at Carver coordinated the activity.
