With spring in the air, it’s time for the Ettrick-Matoaca Historical Society’s 11th annual Celtic Festival on Saturday, April 30, at the Knox Springs Farm on Halloway Avenue, just past Matoaca Middle School. The event is free to attend, running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Highlighting the Scottish History of Ettrick and Matoaca, the festival will be celebrated with food, song, dance, music and fun.
“It gets bigger and better every year,” Ettrick-Matoaca Historical Society chairwoman Mary Ellen Anderson explained. “Everyone enjoys Knox Farm and it’s a wonderful historical site for a Celtic Festival. Despite some early rain drops last year, we enjoyed our largest crowd ever. Everyone had fun.”
Circling Knox Spring Farm every hour throughout the day will be the St. Andrew Legion Pipes and Drums, a Richmond-based band dressed in full Scottish attire that has been an annual visitor at the festival in years past. Also, Clan Haggis, a group of four local Scott-Irish singers and dancers, will perform several times during the day in their Scottish kilts. Native American dancers will be performing during the event as well.
Owner of Knox Spring Farm John Knox McEwen will have on display his collection of artifacts, arrow heads and ax heads found on his beloved farm.
The Matoaca Methodists Youth will be serving hot dogs and hamburgers, and the South Chesterfield Ruritan Club will serve their famous Brunswick Strew. Crazy Cindy’s Kettle Korn will be sold, as will funnel cakes and ice-cold drinks.
Horse and pony rides will be given, and a small petting zoo will provide the little ones with some natural entertainment. Guests are asked to leave the dogs at home, as the farm animals tend to get a little heated and flustered at the sight of their domesticated friends.
The event will include opportunities for community members to learn in-depth about Scottish heritage in the immediate area.
The Ettrick-Matoaca Celtic Festival remembers the past and reunites families and friends for a day of fun, food, music and entertainment. For additional information, directions, or booth space, contact Jeff Anderson, 526-8376 or email: email@example.com .
