Bilal Sayar, son of Sharif and Anena Sayar, delivered the valedictory address to the Matoaca High School Class of 2010. With plans to study biomedical engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall and a goal of being a neurosurgeon, Sayar gave advice about the future to the 412 seniors during the commencement exercises on Friday, June 11.
Sayar asked what his peers could do to be successful again now that they had succeeded by receiving their diploma. By reaching the day of graduation, he said, they have learned the process.
“We have to learn how to be seniors again,” he said. His classmates made good decisions to get them where they were today, he said, and they have to continue making good decisions to become seniors in their future endeavors. They are starting with a blank page and he asked, “What will we write on our blank pages tomorrow?”
Salutatorian Caroline Sung Un Moon, daughter of Kwang Suk Moon and Ok Hee Moon, addressed the class, reflecting on reaching high school, their accomplishments and what the future has in store for them. She said: “Together we have all contributed to Matoaca High and together we have made Matoaca High a better place.”
Matoaca High seniors are recipients of over $1.7 million in scholarships. Special presentations included a $2,000 check given by class historian Victoria Katherine Crosier Armstrong to Stephen Cunningham for the school’s beautification fund and Dr. Marcus Newsome, Chesterfield County’s superintendent, presenting the Superintendent’s Award to Alyssa Gail Shelley and Patrick Francis Christ.
The ceremony will replay on Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon Fios Channel 26 on Friday, June 25, at 10 a.m.
