Over $200,000 in scholarships, excluding university and college awards, were awarded to Thomas Dale High School seniors during the Community Scholarship & Awards Assembly held in the school’s auditorium last Thursday. Several members from the community were in attendance to award their scholarships.
Mr. and Mrs. Gwaltney started the program off with the award in honor of their son, Matthew G. Gwaltney, who was killed during the Virginia Tech mass shooting in 2007. The scholarship given was the 7th Annual Matthew G. Gwaltney Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.
The Fat Boy Club Academic Scholarship had a little fun, when members Michael Crusco and Mark Fowler presented the $2,500 award in the form of a big check written for 25,000 cents.
A total of 48 scholarships and awards were given out during the ceremony, as well as awards to 4.0 scholars.
