Even though it has been 50 years, most people know exactly where they were when they heard the news of the John F. Kennedy assassination by Lee Harvey Oswald on Friday, November 22, 1963. There have been dozens of books and hundreds of articles written about the incident. Two of the most noteworthy recent titles are Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing Lincoln,” which came out a few years ago, and Larry Sabato’s “The Kennedy Half-Century.”* There are numerous theories concerning who was behind it and why, as well as, about possible subsequent cover-ups. On Tuesday, October 22, a local expert on the topic, Dr. Charles Todd, presented some of the information which has brought him to his theory of the events leading up to and the cover-up after JFK’s assassination to the Chester Lions Club.
Inga Arvad was the Danish beauty who interviewed Hitler in 1935 and joined him at the 1936 Summer Olympics. When she continued her journalism studies and became a resident alien in the United States, she was investigated by J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI as a German spy. Kathleen, JFK’s sister, introduced her to John while they were both reporters for the Washington Times-Herald. Inga and John had a brief romantic relationship during the winter of 1941-42. It is commonly believed that that relationship led to John being given a assignment in the South Pacific where he became a war hero. He is one of the only two presidents to have earned a Purple Heart. Inga eventually moved to California and became a motion picture writer and actress. She married Tim McCoy in 1946 and became a U.S. citizen.
Kennedy was aware of the wire taps and surveillance during his time with Inga and knew the part that Hoover and the FBI had played in his reassignment. J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI, under his direction, tracked all aliens and frequently tapped their telephones. Hoover was personally responsible for the deportation of over 250 Russians. Hoover instructed “the FBI to find dirt on all politicians.” Dr. Todd explained that J. Edgar Hoover was one of the five or more people or groups identified as possible puppet-masters or conspirators who wanted JFK eliminated or out of the way. Others identified by Dr. Todd are: 2. Organized Crime, 3. The Military Industrial Complex, 4. Lyndon B. Johnson, 5. Allen Welsh Dulles, the Director of Central Intelligence (CIA).
Dr. Todd possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge concerning the characters in the scenario and raised numerous questions concerning the roles that the people played. Lee Harvey Oswald was a trained sharpshooter but, that was downgraded in 1959, and he had been employed by the Texas School Book Depository for only one month, since October 20, 1963. His allegiances are questionable because even though he had defected to the Soviet Union in 1959, he repatriated with a wife and child during the summer of 1962. It is highly improbable that he was intelligent enough to have come up with the plan by himself. The motorcade route was not given out until the day before Kennedy’s arrival. He was definitely involved, but his role has been over-reported and he did not act alone. Jack Ruby (and Organized Crime) had to take care of the loose end that Oswald had become.
Dr. Todd researched the Warren Commission Report that came out in the fall of 1964, and the 26 volumes of information at Alderman Library at UVA where he was working on his doctorate at the time. According to Dr. Todd, there are seven facts that cannot be denied or overlooked when discussing Kennedy’s assassination or its aftermath.
- JFK was killed by a sharpshooter.
- At least one of the shots came from the front.
- Oswald was involved.
- The FBI destroyed evidence.
- The “magic” bullet idea is ridiculous.
- The Warren Commission used information from boxes provided by the FBI.
- J. Edgar Hoover was somewhere in the background and the Warren Commission was a farce and cover-up.
If you look back at Dr. Todd’s group of suspects, note that LBJ appointed the Warren Commission, Hoover was behind it and Allen Dulles was on it.
*In the opinion of Law Professor A. Steele, “If people want a more balanced ... view, they should read Bill O’Reilly’s book, Killing Kennedy. If they want a clear explanation of the number of shots fired and the path of the bullets, they should read Larry Sabato’s book.”
