Chesterfield County took the top slot among the country’s Top Ten Digital Counties, according to a survey measuring information and communications technology use, the National Association of Counties announced Thursday, July 18.
This is the third consecutive year Chesterfield County ranked among the top ten counties with a population between 250,000 and 499,000. Chesterfield ranked fifth in the same category last year, and third the year before that. Each survey sheds light on the direction digital technology is taking across the country and 2012 left little doubt operational efficiency is guiding decisions in today’s county IT office.
For instance, 84 percent of counties that submitted the survey said they are consolidating data centers, applications and staff – a 13 percent increase over the past two years. The survey also found that 80 percent are pursuing joint information services delivery – a 10 percent increase compared to two years ago. In addition, 49 percent said they were implementing business intelligence and/or advanced analytics at the enterprise level – up 18 percent from last year.
It is all part of a growing trend to move government IT beyond the world of electronic records management and into electronic information management, according to Kimberly Samuelson, Director of Government Strategy at Laserfiche Document Management. Among the winners in the four population-size categories measured, 20 use Laserfiche enterprise content management software for information management purposes, including Chesterfield. Three of those Laserfiche customers are first place finishers this year.
“Document workflow and business process management are increasingly replacing attaching documents and emailing them,” Samuelson says. “As governments are forced to do more with less these technologies are becoming priceless in the pursuit of savings. It’s why they are so popular.”
