Matoaca High School Advanced Theater students under the direction of Jana Farrell travelled to Center Stage in Richmond on Friday, March 15 to participate in the Richmond Shakespeare “The Bardathon.” Richmond Shakespeare picked a play, “Comedy of Errors,” and participating schools each chose a scene to perform. Each group could interpret the scene in whatever style they chose. The Matoaca High students worked on their scene for several months in anticipation of the opportunity to come together on the Friday with other school groups and share their interpretations. During the day, the schools got together and performed the scenes in order, staging the whole play for each other in a variety of styles. This was not a competition, rather a showcase of various styles and the talents of each schools’ group.
The Matoaca High students had an amazing time. The students were very anxious, not knowing what to expect, how other groups would react to each interpretation and if the play would flow into one unit. The Matoaca students gave an incredible performance that was very well received. More importantly, they had an awesome experience and felt very proud of themselves at the end of the day.
The Matoaca Advanced Theater students who participated in “The Bardathon” included Abi Connolly, Patric Cox, Anthony Parham, Devin DeLozier, Ivey Burton, Christen Moore and Chris Quarterman.
