Over 200 folks enjoyed desserts of all sorts during the annual fundraiser for The Pregnancy Help Center of Chesterfield Dessert Reception held at the Colonial Heights Baptist Church last Thursday. The 501(c) 3 organization exists for the purpose of providing support, education and resources for women and men facing unprepared pregnancy. Dr. John Seeds, Senior Associate Dean of Professional Education Programs at Virginia Commonwealth University, was the Keynote Speaker for the event.
The new pregnancy resource center is located at 2675 Osborne Rd., Chester. “Our mission is to demonstrate the love of Christ through the ministries of prevention, intervention and restoration by encouraging sexual integrity, empowering life affirming decisions and providing opportunities for healing,” stated Deborah Markwood, executive director of the center.
The center’s services include free pregnancy tests, education about parenting, adoption and abortion procedures, and support and mentoring throughout pregnancy. Their “Earn While You Learn” program teaches topics such as healthy pregnancy, nutrition, life skills, discipline and healthy parenting. There is also a “Baby Boutique” where clients may shop for material resources for their baby with “Baby Bucks” earned for participation in their program.
The Pregnancy Help Center gives referral for family needs, medical help and job placement. They also offer a post-abortive support group and a men’s mentoring program.
