Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Pi Chapter supports Operation Smile

The Beta Pi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma recently raised funds and collected items needed to place in ‘Smile Bags’ that are given to children receiving the services of Operation Smile around the world.  Operation Smile stresses the importance of diversity as evidenced by its presence in more than 60 countries, providing more than two million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children born with facial deformities worldwide.

Dr. Sam Fuller, who donates his time to perform surgeries with Operation Smile, gave a presentation about his work to Beta Pi members at their February meeting. Operation Smile is the second love of his life, and his presentation at Beta Pi enabled the group to share the love they have for others by embracing this worthy cause.  He spoke of the discrimination children with facial deformities face in other countries, often keeping them from attending school.   Within minutes the Beta Pi sisters, who work to support education locally and around the world, were writing checks for Dr. Fuller to support his work with Operation Smile.  But they did not stop  there.   Organized by member, Dr. Carla Mathews, the group collected crayons, coloring books, combs, tooth brushes, soap, shampoo, mirrors, washcloths and stuffed animals, as well as sewing draw-string cloth bags, known as ‘Smile Bags’ in which to put the items.

Again, the work of Beta Pi did not stop there; four members, Dr. Carla Mathews, Debby Howard, Cathy Epps and Nancy Alpine traveled to Norfolk on June 21 to personally deliver the two large boxes of supplies to Operation Smile’s International Headquarters.  They spent two volunteer-hours filling 500 ‘Smile Bags’ and had a rewarding, fun-filled time. Dr. Sam Fuller has been an inspiration to these ladies, and Operation Smile has become dear to their hearts.
