Richard Cordle named Treasurer of the Year

The Treasurers’ Association of Virginia has named Richard Cordle the Treasurer of the Year. The award specifically mentioned the efforts of Cordle’s office toward regional cooperation, customer service and service to the association.

“While I appreciate the recognition, it could have never happened without the tremendous support from my staff,” Cordle said.

The mission of the Treasurer’s Association of Virginia is to support the professional development of Virginia’s local government treasurers through information, training and networking opportunities.

“We are proud of Richard’s accomplishment and the recognition bestowed upon him from his peers,” said Bill Dupler, deputy county administrator for Community Development.

“It’s another shining example of what make Chesterfield County a FIRST CHOICE community.”

Cordle has served as Treasurer of Chesterfield County for 25 years. Elected in 1991, during his first tax season, there was a four-hour wait in line for folks wanting to pay their taxes. Over the years, he and his team focused on stream-lining the office and today, the wait has been reduced to 15 or 20 minutes.

There are no more county decal stickers, which allows individuals to have more of a choice in paying their taxes. You can still pay them in person or by mail, and now taxes may be paid on-line on the county’s website.  Budget plans have also been put in place to allow individuals to pay in four installments.

“Anything we can do to make it easier,” said Cordle.  “We have helped people to understand the importance of paying their taxes.”

Cordle was surprised and humbled with the honor.  “To be receiving this award for something that you enjoy doing every day is the ultimate,” he said. I am very humbled and very grateful.

He also stressed that he could not have accomplished where the office is today without his team. “We are only as good as our weakest link. We can’t do it without a team.”

Cordle works with five deputies and a total of 44 employees.
