Conservation learning activities for kids at Dutch Gap

Start your morning at the Dutch Gap Conservation Area and join the naturalist to explore the forest, wetlands, meadows, lagoon, vernal pool or river. All programs are $8/child (Exploring Dutch Gap by Bike and Boat is $13/child) and begin at 9 a.m. at the Henricus Visitor Center. Unless noted, all programs are about 90 minutes in length and are for children aged 5-12. Register at least one week before program. Exploring Dutch Gap by Bike and Boat

Ride your fat-tire bike (or hybrid bike) and paddle our kayaks to explore the Dutch Gap Conservation Area. Bike an easy two miles to the Peninsula, then hop in our kayaks to explore the lagoon and cool off. Paddle will be about 45 minutes and total bike trip will be about 4 miles. This program will last about 3 hours. Participants must bring their own bikes, water, bathing suit, towel, and snack. Helmets are required. For ages 9-12. Thursday, July 5 and Thursday, Aug. 2.

I Dig Owl Pellets
Whooo knows what an owl pellet is? What’s inside an owl pellet? Join the naturalist and dig into owl pellets to find out whooo was lunch. Wednesday, July 18.

Butterflies and Dragonflies

Roam the fields and waterways with the naturalist to discover the colorful world of butterflies and dragonflies. Look for eastern tiger and zebra swallowtails, skippers, whitetails, and eastern pondhawks. Nets and cages will be provided. Friday, Aug. 10.
