Carver girls win first county championship

In a first for Carver Middle School, the girls track team sped to the County Track Championship Friday afternoon at Manchester High School.  The Cougars were led by Deja Powell’s victories in the 100 and 200, while Ainsley Greenwald took the 800 in a new school record time of 2:30.  The pair then anchored their respective relay teams to impressive victories, as Carver edged Bailey Bridge to win their first ever county title.

The Cougars showed their depth and versatility by placing in each and every one of the 14 events.  Premiere Costen placed in high, triple, 100 and 200.  Iyana Wongus established a new school record in the triple jump, while also placing in the 400.  Kristen Parker and Uressa Oriente placed in both, the shot and discus.  Marijah Mosley scored in the high jump, triple jump, hurdles and 400.  Other place winners included Caroline Johnson in the 3200, Deja Mayfield in the 1600, and Bryana Ferrell and Brina Bentley in the 400.

“This was a special group of athletes,” commented winning head coach Geoff LeSueur. He went on, “I felt if we could stay close going into the 400, our depth would take over.”

Matoaca’s Taylor McCoy took first in the shot put.
