Hening takes big steps for a cure

The Thursday before spring break was field day for the students at Hening Elementary and they were antsy, ready for their  break. Adding to the excitement of the day for the fourth grade classes was seeing their assistant principal, Bill Caten, and third grade teacher, Colin Wharton, get pie-in-the-face.

The pie-in-the-face was the climax of a fund drive, “Taking Steps” to Find a Cure at Field Day, held for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. The fourth grade classes won the right to see the event by raising the most money.

Teachers, administrators and students from Hening have been very active over the years with raising money for Relay for Life.  Their Relay for Life team ‘s name is Hope with Hening Hornets.

With their “Taking Steps” drive, students were able to purchase a foot decal to be posted in the hallway honoring a family member or friend who had or has cancer.  The fourth grade class raised $646 adding to the total raised during the drive of $1,912.  The Hening team, that has been together for six years, has raised $6,400 this year and has a goal of $10,000.

Assistant Principal Caten didn’t mind getting pie-in-the-face. “It’s for a good cause,” he said.  “I’ve been dunked and a lot of other various things.  I will do whatever it takes to help motivate kids.  They have been able to chart their progress and they really got into it and there is always an education experience to it.”

During the 2012 Relay For Life of Courthouse, VA held on June 2 at L.C. Bird High School, Hope for Hening Hornets will join other teams and camp out overnight as well as take turns walking around the track to raise money and awareness to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

“Saving lives from cancer starts with one team, one participant, and one dollar at a time.” stated Wharton on the Relay for LIfe’s website. Wharton is also the team captain for the Hope with Hening Hornets.  “Our team is doing our part to make sure that cancer never steals another year of anyone’s life.”
