Sandifer runs for records and causes

Matoaca eighth grader, Sadie Sandifer is a running machine.  She was bitten by the running bug after completing her first 5K race as a second grader.

“I found this was something I was pretty good at, and I loved competing in races from the very beginning.”

Sadie has recently completed her second Shamrock Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) in Virginia Beach, finishing first in her age group.  She was 19th overall out of nearly 8,000 women who enter in the race.  She will be running Monument Avenue next week with the hope of improving on last year’s 3rd place finish in her age group.   As a member of her school’s highly successful track team, Sadie has set records in both the two-mile and one-mile runs.  Her times of 12:23 and 5:53 rank with some of the fastest times ever run in Chesterfield.

This spring, Sadie has shifted gears from athlete to race organizer.  The First Annual Chesdin Landing 5K for Charities is her brainchild.

“I got to thinking about the 5K races I have ran, the entry fees that I have paid; I began to wonder where the money goes,” Sadie said. “I learned that a good deal of money is raised for charity.”

Sadie explained that the first Chesdin race will benefit the Wounded Warrior Program.

“My dad works as a Physician’s Assistant in the United States Army, saving lives on the battlefield,” she said. “The Wounded Warrior Program assists soldiers who are facing difficulties returning to society due to injury.”

Working with her mom, Sadie has been marketing the race throughout Chesterfield and Southside Virginia.  She is hoping for a huge turnout.  “The plan is to pick a different charity each year.  I’m thinking about the Red Cross and the Matoaca Track Program as future recipients.”

This year’s race registration will be held at the Chesdin Landing Trophy Room on Saturday, May 12 . Race time is 9 a.m.  The 5K course will be challenging, but fun, according to organizers.

All runners and walkers will receive a commemorative t-shirt.  There will also be medals for age group and overall winners.  Cost for participants is $25.  Families of four or more can participate for $90.  Additional donations are welcomed.
