Matoaca HS collected 1200 pounds of food for Christmas Mother

As part of a schoolwide project, Matoaca High School collected over 1200 pounds of food to benefit the Colonial Heights-Chesterfield Christmas Mother Program. This project was managed by the school’s American Red Cross Club in collaboration with the Special Education department and the school library. Donations were brought in by students and teachers from November 14  through November 30.  Principal Stephen Cunningham offered a Pizza Party as an incentive to students that brought 10 cans: 108 students took him up on this challenge. The library offered students who owed library fines an opportunity to use non-perishable food items to waive their fines - numerous students took advantage of this opportunity, particularly seniors, under Gail Ledbetter, administrator for the Senior Class, and James Burrell’s encouragement. Many enthusiastic teachers encouraged students to donate through their own classes and students responded with the same enthusiasm. The result of the school community’s effort was outstanding. In return many families in need, including Matoaca families, will benefit from this endeavor.
