A group of fourth graders from Salem Church Elementary School took second place in the 2010 State-Wide Boat Design Competition, according to information from Samantha Webster. The Virginia Children’s Engineering Council held the state-wide boat design competition on Feb. 25 in Midlothian.
Without any input from adults, each group was given three wire hangers, 55 yards of duct tape, 25 yards of aluminum foil and a roll of masking tape. They were to build and design a boat to see how many single-serving pineapple juice cans it would hold before sinking.
