Stella Y. Edwards has said yes to running for the Bermuda District School Board seat. Mrs. Edwards, who is a mother, wife, teacher, parent and child advocate, education activist, radio co-host and former United States Army Officer calls her campaign “A voice for children and their families.”
Once elected, Mrs. Edwards says she plans to continue working to ensure that all students – from prekindergarten through the senior class – have access to programs and activities that will allow them to reach their highest level of achievement. In addition, she will work to ensure that the best and brightest teachers are hired and retained, since teachers are the single most important factor in a child’s education and success after the family.
Mrs. Edwards believes that accountability at all levels is paramount for the continued success of our students, and that her experience as a U. S. Army officer will bring a disciplined approach to fiscal, behavioral and curriculum issues, as well as relationship development amongst county governance.
Mrs. Edwards currently works with the JustChildren Program of Legal Aid Justice Center, providing training to parents and community groups in one of the state’s lowest performing school districts. This work requires fostering community engagement to ensure that young people receive the educational services and support they need to graduate to pursue college or careers and lead productive lives. Mrs. Edwards works from the belief that all children deserve the right to high-quality education.
Mrs. Edwards has represented the National PTA as a speaker on education issues at the U. S. House of Representatives, served as member representative on the National PTA Board of Directors and currently serves on the National PTA’s Legislation Committee, National Ministries Conference, National Legislators Education Summit, Virginia General Assembly, Virginia Board of Education, Virginia Department of Education’s Career, and Technical Education’s Summer Professional Development Institute.
Mrs. Edwards’ statewide involvement includes being a member representative on the Virginia Education Coalition, representative on the Virginia Safe Routes to School Network, member of the planning committee for Virginia’s 400th Anniversary of America, moderator of the Virginia Education Forum, and program committee for the Virginia Women’s Missionary Union. Mrs. Edwards has been an active member of the Virginia PTA for 17 years in various capacities: Executive Committee, Legislation Chair, Education Chair, Capitol Committee Chair, Nominations Committee Chair, Budget Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and Bylaws Committee. She also represents the Virginia PTA on the Virginia Department of Education’s No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Committee of Practitioners and served as representative on the Career and Technical Education Program Committee.
Mrs. Edwards’ local involvement has extended throughout her community. Mrs. Edwards currently serves as the President of Chesterfield County Council of PTAs/PTSAs and works to train citizens on civic engagement, parent/family involvement in education, and monitoring local school division’s education reforms to ensure academic success and equality in educational opportunities. She has served on numerous local education-based committees, too many to mention here.
