Chesterfield County’s police and fire departments have recovered the body of a man who was missing after swimming in the Appomattox River Sunday afternoon.
On Sunday, July 10, police and fire personnel responded to the 21500 block of Chesterfield Avenue for a report of a man who was missing after swimming in the river. Police said Jeffery Zudonyi, 36, of Petersburg, was swept away by strong currents while wading in the river with friends.
The Chesterfield County Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team, along with representatives from the Colonial Heights and Petersburg Fire Departments, conducted a search of the area, but did not locate Zudonyi prior to suspending the search at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The search resumed at about 10 a.m. on Monday, July 11, and a Chesterfield dive team found a body at about 3 p.m. Monday. The body was identified as that of Zudonyi.
