L.C. Bird: Team work, memories, gains and losses speaker’s theme

The L.C. Bird Class of 2011 took part in the 32nd Commencement exercises for L.C. Bird High School and the Governor’s Academy for Engineering Studies.  Four hundred twenty-four graduates received their diplomas during the Friday afternoon ceremonies.

Valedictorian for the class, Joshua Michael Layne, addressed his class about gains and losses.  He received a full scholarship to attend William & Mary where he will study foreign languages and global studies. Salutatorian was Tracy Katherine Cole. She spoke to her class about team work and high school memories and doing their best as they go out into the world.  She will be attending Christopher Newport University to study business. Engineering Peer-Elected speaker was Jeremy Maddrey Jones.  He reflecting on how the engineering class had grown up together and that they are now a family even though they are going off to do new things. Jones will be attending Virginia Tech to study architecture.

Specials awards included:  Recipients for the Superintendent’s Award for Academic & Citizenship were Javar David Christian and Erica Thacker Bennett.  Jeremy Maddrey Jones received the Faculty Scholarship; the Faculty Service Award recipient was Jazmine Forbes and the Mildred P. Spencer Scholarship was awarded to Jacob Scott Carver.
Dr. Nancy R. Hoover, coordinator of the Governor’s Academy of Engineering Studies, gave the Keynote Address.
