Matoaca students help clean yards

The weather was cold and the day overcast, but the warm spirit of service was burning bright last month when the Matoaca High School Red Cross Club helped several local citizens clear leaves from their yards, according to information from Librarian Alda Moore. The club members arrived with rakes, gloves and energy enough to rake, mulch and bag two yards in just two and a half hours.

Club sponsor Maureen Cheatham and club officers selected the project as a means for club members to help their neighbors who could not physically handle leaf raking and yard work. According to Cheatham, the students organized into teams that worked to clear specific areas and move leaves to adult volunteers, who used equipment to mulch the leaves or to bag the leaves for curbside pickup.
