Matoaca High collects 327 bags of food

During a school-wide food drive for the Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother program, 327 bags of food were collected from the students, staff and community of Matoaca High School, according to information from Librarian Alda Moore. The food drive ran from Nov. 15 to Dec. 1. The Red Cross Club and the special education students and teachers coordinated the effort, providing food collection bags in each classroom, collecting bags and moving food to the central pickup point.

The library allowed students to bring in canned food to clear their library overdue fines, calling the program “Food for Fines.” Special education teachers Traci Brown and Lori Prendergast, along with many teachers and staff, helped organize the bag pick-up from classrooms each day. Red Cross Club sponsor Maureen Cheatham coordinated all efforts and kept the school community focused on helping its friends and neighbors during the holiday season.
