Bird grad killed in Afghanistan

Army Spc. William K. Middleton, 26, died Monday, Nov. 22, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, the Department of Defense announced last week.

On Thursday, Nov. 25, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Middleton, a 2002 graduate of L.C. Bird High School, was born and raised in the Richmond area. He was a 2007 graduate of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and he joined the Army in 2009, the Times-Dispatch reported.

Another member of Middleton’s unit, Staff Sgt. Sean M. Flannery of Wyomissing, Pa., was also killed. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky., according to the DOD.
