Perrymont Middle could become staff development site

The Planning Commission is set to take up a request Tuesday from the School Board, which has asked for a substantial accord determination to permit the conversion of the Perrymont Middle School building to a school staff development facility.

The building, located at 8610 Perrymont Road, housed an alternative middle school until it was closed at the end of last school year because of budget cuts. According to a planning department staff report on the matter, the School Board wants to “convert the existing improvements to accommodate a staff development facility for the purpose of training school staff.”

On Monday, school spokesman Shawn Smith said no additional work was needed on the building. The “big thing” is that using the Perrymont building would allow the school system to reduce the amount of money it spends to rent outside facilities for training, he said.

“The use of the old Perrymont Middle for staff development purposes will allow the school division to have the majority of those operations under one roof,” he said. Plans include moving the school system’s professional development staff from the Thomas Fulghum Center to Perrymont, he said.

According to the report, the planning staff has recommended that the commission find the proposed use in accord with the adopted comprehensive plan. The proposed use is compatible with other area uses and it would “allow continued use of a public facility that might otherwise remain vacant,” the report says.
