Knights, Warriors dominate in district play

Coach Nolan Shigley’s Warriors were as hot as the temperatures last Wednesday in capturing the school’s first Central District Meet Championship at Battlefield Park. With four Matoaca runners finishing in the top seven, the Warriors were able to edge perennial champion Thomas Dale by 34-43. As expected, Joel Reynolds continued his domination of the Central District by repeating as individual champion.

Displaying a quiet confidence prior to the race, Joel’s younger brother, Matt, surprised many onlookers by breaking out of the pack to finish second in the contest. Thomas Hartka and Heath Anderson ran tremendous races to finish sixth and seventh, securing the Warriors’ fortunes. Ryan Dickerson grabbed the fifth spot for Matoaca, edging out teammate Andrew Bean.

The Warriors will be joined by Thomas Dale in competing against the Central Region’s elite runners Saturday afternoon at Pole Green Park.

In Dominion District Cross Country, Bird freshman Nichelle Scott was the area’s lone qualifier for the Central Region Championship. Nichelle crossed the line in a personal best 20:08, which was good for ninth place among the very strong field that was again dominated by Midlothian.

In field hockey, coach Beth Jaeckle’s team quieted their rivals by scoring a dominating 6-0 victory over Prince George in the District finals. The Knights dominated on both sides of the field as Hailey Flores, Kelsey Daugherty and Hannah Robbins continued to be standouts for Thomas Dale. The Knights prepare to face Maggie Walker in the opening round of the Central Region Tournament, hoping to avenge an earlier regular season loss at the hands of the Dragons. Dale hopes to continue its streak of state tournament participation.

Central District Volleyball tournament play will take place this week.
