This past weekend’s “super regional” was necessitated by the recent barrage of winter weather in central Virginia, but it was generally well received by athletes and fans alike.
Having 32 wrestlers competing in each weight class certainly gave the event a big-time feel. Matoaca finished third in the team scoring, just behind Hanover and host James River. Thomas Dale finished eighth.
Three local grapplers walked away from the event as Central Region champions. The Knight’s James White continued his winning ways by taking the 130 title. At 140 and 145, Matoaca’s Blake Roulo and Josh Clark each dominated their weight classes. All three of these wrestlers are seen as strong contenders for a state title.
Also moving on to the state tournament will be Dale’s Brandon Diamond, who placed second at 152, and Alex Turley, who placed third at 135. Advancing Warriors include Xavier Edwards, who placed second at 160, Austin Akins, who placed second at 189, and Michael Peters, who placed fourth at 103.
The AAA State Tournament will be contested on Friday and Saturday at James Robinson High School in Fairfax County.
