Old Man Winter makes third appearance

Many local teams and athletes are experiencing tremendous success this season in basketball and wrestling, but the one foe they are having trouble staving off is the snow the area has experienced over the last month and a half.  With regional and state play looming on the horizon, teams are struggling with the prospect of canceling regular season games and scaling back or eliminating district tournaments all together.  In addition, the Chesterfield policy of “no school, no practice” may place local powerhouses, such as

Thomas Dale girls’ basketball and Matoaca wrestling, squarely behind the eight ball when play finally does resume.

District wrestling tournaments were wiped out this past weekend and have been rescheduled for Monday and Tuesday.  If the districts were unable to contest the matches due to weather, the Central Region Tournament would become a “Super Regional,” with 32 wrestlers competing in each weight class this coming weekend at James River.  “We will be concurrently running eight mats in the early rounds,” explained Central District Chairman Chad Knowles.

In basketball, the teams will most certainly be looking at an abbreviated regular season schedule.  Not many games have been played over the last two weeks by teams looking to pursue district titles and beyond.

At the middle school level, the boys’ basketball championship was scheduled to be conducted at Manchester High School last Saturday.  With the snow, the championship game was tentatively moved to Tuesday. Falling Creek is in the midst of an 11-game win streak.  Robious and Manchester seem to be the biggest obstacles in the Panthers’ path to the title.

For 365 Monument Avenue 10K hopefuls, the weather has played havoc with their training schedules.  Snow storms the last two weeks have led to cancelations of their group runs, leaving coaches scrambling to adjust their training regimens hoping to ensure success in the March 27 event.

And to think, spring tryouts and practices begin next week.
