Matoaca, Elizabeth Davis and Salem Church have all advanced to quarterfinal play in the 2010 CCPS Middle School Basketball Tournament by virtue of first round victories last Thursday. They join the Falling Creek Panthers, who earned a first-round bye with their 11-1 regular season record.
In Thursday’s game at Matoaca, the Warriors saw an early double-digit lead disappear as Carver closed to 30-29 entering the game’s final six minutes. An eight-point outburst from Resean Bolton over the next three possessions allowed the Warriors to take control. Bolton led all scorers with 21 points, with a combination of jumpers from the wing and strong drives to the basket. Khalil Coleman chipped in 12 points and was dominant on the glass against the much taller Cougars. Dominic Hollins was also effective on the boards, while Trequan Heath turned in a solid game from his point position.
The Warriors began the season slowly at 2-4, but have righted the ship and now stand at 8-5. Coach Jonathan Twilley likes his team’s effort to this point. “The guys are beginning to trust the offense and don’t feel they have to make things happen as much,” he said. Matoaca travels to Tomahawk in the next round.
The Final Four is scheduled for Friday night and Saturday night at Manchester High School. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for students middle school age and younger.
