While many of this year’s ChesterFest attendees are still in their beds, a group of runners will warm up and hit the streets and trails in Chester during the festival’s 5K.
The fourth annual race will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, and registration and packet pick-up will start at 7:15 a.m. The race will be run on the Chester Greenway, a soft stone surface, and through surrounding neighborhoods.
“The race itself is a cool little course,” said Anthony Barnes, the owner of Anytime Fitness in Chester. “It’s got a little of everything,” and it’s not terribly difficult, he said.
This year, everyone who enters the race will also be entered in a raffle to win one of two one-year memberships at Anytime Fitness, Barnes said. In the past, only the race’s winners could have earned prizes, he said.
“I think it should encourage more people to come out,” he said of giving all race entrants the chance to win a prize.
Runners will be split into a host of age groups ranging from 13 and under to 70 and up. The starting line will be at West Hundred Road and Lee Street in Chester and parking will be available in the Rite Aid lot.
Preregistration costs $15, or $5 for students age 16 and younger, and must be received by organizers by Saturday, Sept. 18. After Sept. 18 and including race day, registration will cost $20, or $10 for students age 16 and younger. The first 100 runners preregistered will receive a ChesterFest 5K T-shirt.
Registration checks should be made payable to the Chester Community Association and mailed with the registration form to: Chesterfest 5K Run, PO Box 3175 Chester, VA 23831. Participants can also register online at active.com.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the development of greenways, such as the Linear Park, in the area.
