Defense Logistics Agency Aviation and DLA Installation Support employees delivered 16 boxes of school supplies to three schools in DLA Aviation’s School Partnership Program on Aug. 26, according to information from DLA Aviation.
The supplies, which filled 60 book bags and backpacks, were collected during the DLA Aviation annual school supply drive, which was officially launched on Aug. 3 and continued through Aug. 23, the press release says.
The bulk of the supplies was received from votes in the form of book bags or backpacks filled with school supplies-cast for select senior leaders to sit in a dunking booth during the National Day Out Program, the release says. The remainder was donated by employees throughout the school supply drive, it says.
“We are so grateful that we have this partnership with DLA Aviation,” Renee Shimko-Daye, assistant principal of Bensley Elementary School, says in the release. “I will be going through everything to organize and separate it out and then I will share it with all of the grade levels and make sure our students have everything they need to start the new year. It’s a great feeling to be able to give the kids the supplies that they need that their parents can’t give them. We’ve all been to school, we’ve set there not having the latest and greatest and not having what you need, so this is great. This will definitely benefit our students.”
DLA Aviation partnership schools include Bensley, Bellwood and G.H. Reid elementary schools, and Meadowbrook High School, the release says. Through the School Partnership Program, employees at DLA Aviation also volunteer on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, it says. Employees have volunteered at the local schools for more than 15 years, it says, and the first partnership was with Bensley Elementary in 1992.
