Hello and welcome back to your information center located in the middle of the Dogpound. In the Dogpound, along with smiles and chuckles, we try to bring you, the readers, educational data bits that might help make your daily life routines go a bit easier. With that in mind, I wanted to share an interesting situation I encountered at the local Wal-Mart store pharmacy.
The lady behind the counter pulled my bag of goodies and told me the damages were $82.75; being of hard hearing, I repeated the number back to her. She confirmed the number and I proceed to make the check out for that amount. I thought I saw a different number appear on the little black box on the counter, but I figured that must have been the previous customer’s total and gave it no mind at the time. However, as I walked out of the store, I glanced at my purchase and noticed that the receipt read $182.75.
Thinking that maybe I received the wrong packet, I opened it up, double checked, and verified it was indeed my purchase. So, I made a U-turn and returned to the pharmacy counter, where they confirmed this was indeed the correct price, even though I checked the price with the clerk and my check was made out for $100 less than what they posted on their receipt records.
The lesson here, my faithful, is that in today’s world of electronic check cashing, you need to double check your receipt against your check since they can override whatever you write on that check. This goes for the option of asking for a cash advance when you make a purchase. Even though you may not ask for money back, there have been reports of clerks clicking the button for an extra $20-$50 and keeping the money versus giving it to you. I, for one, have gotten to the point where I do not even bother to check my change or my receipts, but after this little episode I am rethinking my options.
