CBC Mustangs win Zone Tournament, head to Dallas

Upon completion of the regular season last month, 40 9- and 10-year-olds were selected by the league to try out for all-star competition. Fifteen boys, including three Matoaca youngsters, were selected to represent Chesterfield. Brandon Pond and Ryan Smith have been starters on the squad, while Kyle Williams has been a key reserve.

The Chesterfield team proved to be incredibly resilient as it battled through the zone tournament last week at Harry Daniel/Ironbridge Park. Chesterfield Baseball Club’s tournament hopes appeared to be slim after falling behind 9-1 after just two innings against the hot hitting Vestra club from just south of Pittsburgh.

“We are a hitting club and there was a lot of baseball left. I really never doubted our ability to come back,” said parent Robbie Williams, who served as a coach for the Matoaca team during the regular season. And chip away they did. Brandon Pond went to the mound in relief and stopped the onslaught. CBC then went to work, scoring seemingly at will.

Ryan Smith contributed a big double in the rally that gave them the lead for good. Chesterfield went on to an improbable 17-9 victory in the game that went way past 11 p.m., as the tournament was delayed by a storm that went through the area near the dinner hour.

CBC faced a quick turnaround and serious challenge from an Adirondack, New York, team that brought a gaudy record into the zone tournament. CBC prevailed with some outstanding baseball in defeating the New Yorkers 6-4 on Friday and then 11-3 on Saturday. Chesterfield went through the double elimination tournament undefeated.

The team flew to Dallas Tuesday morning as it advanced to the PONY Mustang World Series in Irving, Texas. The tournament runs from Aug. 4-8.

CBC’s Pony team also advanced to World Series play in Washington, Penn., by winning a zone tournament in Woonsocket, R.I.
