It’s been just about a year since American Family Fitness was granted a zoning amendment to upfit the old Kroger Supermarket on South Chalkley Road adjacent to Walmart. Last week The Trent Corporation, a Richmond commercial contractor, began work on the project, removing debris from the building so construction could begin.
According to David Clark, a supervisor with Trent, the property developer and building contractor have changed, but the basic plans have not. Clark said the project should be completed in about six months.
The elevation of the building will be updated according to the original plans, although the entrance may change to provide better access, according to Clark. AFF will not use the entire building, per terms set in the zoning amendment approved in May 2009. The building will be divided to provide another retail space in the western side of the building, which provides a buffer between the fitness center and Walmart. This was done as part of the proffers to allow AFF to remain open from 4 a.m. to midnight daily. Security cameras in all the parking areas will also be provided.
