Senator John Watkins, (R-10th - Powhatan, Chesterfield, Richmond) has proposed a bill in Virginia’s General Assembly (GA) that would permit Chesterfield to take over maintenance on secondary roads in the county.
Only two counties currently do maintenance on their own roads, Arlington and Henrico. There’s good news and bad news hiding in Senate Bill 606. Chesterfield would get more transportation funding for the county, startup and overall costs to maintain the county’s secondary roads.
Watkins says it looks good because it would be an easy system to manage for the county. The Board of Supervisor didn’t request the change and it wasn’t on the county’s legislative agenda.
Currently the bill is in the GA finance committee.
