Leonard to be sworn in as Sheriff Saturday

Chesterfield County will hold an investiture ceremony this Saturday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m., for Karl S. Leonard to be sworn in as the county’s new sheriff, fulfilling the term of Sheriff Dennis Proffitt, who is retiring. The ceremony will be held inside the Historic 1917 Courthouse at 10011 Iron Bridge Rd., in the county government complex.

Leonard is a Chesterfield County Police Department veteran who retired as a major in 2012 after 31 years of service. He returned to work for the Sheriff’s Office in 2013, and currently serves as undersheriff. In addition to his law-enforcement career, Leonard also served for 29 years as a U.S. Coast Guard reservist and fulfilled numerous active-duty command assignments, especially since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It was Leonard’s depth of police and military experience that led Proffitt to select Leonard as his successor. Leonard received the Republican Party nod at a recent convention in Midlothian.

The public is not permitted to attend the investiture because it is an official court proceeding overseen by the Chesterfield County Circuit Court.
