The Next Level: Hughes, Brinkley, Rivers

Sophomore at Norfolk State
In his second season, Hughes starts at free safety for Norfolk State. Thus far, he’s logged nine tackles in the team’s first two games. As a freshman in 2012 he earned his first career start at nickel back against Savannah State and registered three tackles. Hughes, the older brother of Bird running back Earl Hughes, played three varsity seasons at Meadowbrook and was an All-Central District second team selection in the senior year with 31 tackles, 12 defensed passes, an interception and two blocked kicks. The Spartan is majoring in physical education.

Field Hockey, Forward/Attacker

Senior at Eastern Mennonite
Brinkley has put together a solid career both academically and on the field at the next level. The forward/attacker started off well as a freshman, playing and starting in 19 games, scoring two goals and adding an assist. In 2010, she scored a goal, and in 2012 she played in 16 games with two goals and three assists. In 2011-12, she was named to the ODAC All-Academic Team. The senior is majoring in Elementary Education with a minor in coaching.

Sophomore at Bluefield College
Rivers got his college career off to a great start in Bluefield, West Virginia. As a freshman in 2012 he played in nine contests, and led the team in interceptions with four, also registering 23 tackles. Rivers played well in his first contest of the season on September 5 vs. Pikeville (KY), making eight stops. Rivers earned varsity letters at Dale in 2010 and 2011, helping the Knights go undefeated in the Central District in 2010. Rivers also participated in track and field as a Knight.
