Back-to-School: CCPS Edmodo opens new doors for teachers, students and parents

One way to stay in touch with your child’s teacher, their assignments and communicate with their teacher would be through Edmodo -  introduced during the 2012-2013 school year; a computer program designed to make digital curriculum easily accessible to students and teachers. The Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS) use the Edmodo website ( to provide a place to bridge what happens in the formal 45 minutes or so of class with the many more minutes students spend outside of class. Edmodo is still very new to teachers, parents and students, but is catching on and links are found on each school’s website.

The Chesterfield Edmodo website makes it easier for teachers to “blend learning” by providing a place for teachers to access digital curriculum materials such as videos, websites and educational games and seamlessly deliver these activities to students. Teachers may use Edmodo to connect with a global community of teachers, and students may use Edmodo only to communicate with their teachers and their class as a whole within groups created by their teachers. Therefore, Edmodo is a safe, teacher and school moderated environment.

As part of the CCPS Design for Excellence 2020 innovation plan, schools and teachers began teaching with Edmodo during the 2012-2013 school year. Over the course of this year teachers will continue to invite students into groups at a pace that is comfortable to both the school and the teacher. In other words, the number of teachers using Edmodo with their students varies according to school expectations and teacher comfort with the tool and the blended learning style of teaching. At the start of the 2014-2015 school year, teachers will be expected to provide students with engaging course materials via Edmodo. As such, teachers have invited parents into their Edmodo groups that will continue during this two-year implementation phase. The school administrator may set the expectations for parent involvement in Edmodo.

Students and teachers must use their CCPS network account to access Chesterfield Edmodo by visiting, or by visiting and clicking on the Edmodo icon. Edmodo is accessible via iOS (iPhone, iPad, and iPod) apps, as well as Android apps by entering the subdomain name “chesterfield.” If teachers provide students with a “parent code,” the parents may register for a new Edmodo account at you are given a group code. Teachers should lock the group code after everyone in the class has joined, which prevents those who don’t belong from joining.
