Local High School Students Honored at Scholarship and Leadership Award Event

The Southside Virginia Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America awarded Roper Memorial Scholarships to 16 graduating seniors from local area high schools at a ceremony held for recipients, parents and guests at the Petersburg Regional Arts Center on Friday, May 10.  Scholarship Committee Chairman, Colonel Eugene Manner, U.S. Army, retired, stated this year marked the 15th year the Chapter has presented the scholarship and that over $160,000 in Roper Memorial Scholarships have been awarded to 150 high school graduates since 1998.

The 2013 Roper Scholarships recipients are:  Mr. Edward Artis, Sussex Central High School; Miss Virginia DeSantis, Mr. Jackson Nell, and Miss Hannah Spencer all from Math & Science High School at Clover Hill; Miss Kathryn Barisano and Miss Kathryn Bungarden, Miss Catherine Grundy, and Miss Allison Partin, all from Thomas Dale High School; Miss Lauren Hurt and Mr. James Young III from Matoaca High School; Miss Catherine Miller and Mr Anthony Nicely from Cosby High School; Mr Mark Martino and Miss Destinee Taft from Colonial Heights High School; Miss Abigail Bradford from Appomattox Regional Governor’s School; and Mr. Tyler Stephenson from Tidewater Academy.

The Junior ROTC Leadership Award and Medal was presented to Cadet Hunter Love from Prince George High School.  He was accompanied by his Junior ROTC Instructor, Lieutenant Colonel Al Chandler, U.S. Army retired.  The award is presented to an outstanding cadet in his or her next-to-last year in the program and who has demonstrated exceptional potential for military leadership in addition to remarkable dedication to the program and school.  The Southside Virginia Chapter has conducted this program for over 25 years.
