The Next Level: Bierlein, Tollison, Lodge

Junior at Christopher Newport University

Two years ago as a freshman, Bierlein burst onto the scene at Christopher Newport winning the third spot in the rotation as a true freshman, posting a 6-0 record with a 2.29 earned run average. After posting a solid sophomore season, Bierlein has excelled in his junior season. The 6-foot righty finished 7-3 on the season with a 1.99 earned run average, striking out 81 batters over 77 innings. As a Warrior, Bierlein received First Team All-Region, First Team All-Tri-City and First Team All-Metro honors in his senior year.

Logan Tollison, Softball

Sophomore at Virginia State University

In her second season at Virginia State, the utility player has made some strides in her game, earning eight starts on the season. Thus far, she’s turned that game experience into a .279 batting average with a home run and seven runs batted in. A standout at Thomas Dale, Tollison is a Nursing major at Virginia State. On March 31 against Elizabeth City State, Tollison was 2-3 with two RBI as the Trojans cruised to a 12-0 victory.

Travis Lodge, Baseball

Freshman at Randolph Macon College

Lodge is yet another Matoaca alum playing at the next level that was a part of the 2011 region runner-up Warriors. Lodge earned All-Central District honors as a junior and senior before heading to Randolph Macon where he plans to major in Biology. Lodge has stepped in as the Yellow Jackets starting shortstop as a freshman, hitting .270 with 14 RBI and six stolen bases. The freshman has shown some pop, as he’s hit nine doubles, ranking him second on the team in that category. The Yellow Jackets played to a 23-17-1 record on the season and a 10-9-1 record in the ODAC.
