For residents in neighborhoods surrounding the Chesterfield Courthouse, it’s time once again to capitalize on the organic virtues of mulching. This annual Boy Scout fundraiser has been a mainstay for efficient gardeners in our community since its inception nine years ago.
This year, Troop 2886 is teaming up with Trinity United Methodist Church Youth Group to bring mulch to lucky householders who wish to save time, money, and water by spreading fertility over their landscapes and gardens, under their trees and shrubs. Correctly applied mulch can dramatically improve soil productivity by conserving moisture, moderating temperature, and controlling the weeds, pests and the erosion that can accompany our early spring rains.
Early application of mulch can facilitate seeding and transplanting of certain crops, and encourages faster growth. As spring matures to summer, it will stabilize soil temperatures and moisture, and prevent sunlight from germinating weed seeds. Wood mulch is also used on garden or wooded paths to create a comfortable and weed-resistant walking surface.
There’s still time for local horticulturists to prepay orders of two-cubic-foot bags of double-shredded hardwood mulch before the March 15 deadline. Competitive per-bag pricing ranges from $3 to $3.25 depending on order size, with personal delivery to specified locations. Proceeds will help fund Boy Scout and Youth Group missions, activities, and expenses.
