Darkness was fast claiming sky when several vehicles collided at Cogbill and Old Zion Hill roads injuring several occupants on January 18 at 4:45 p.m. Steve Traylor, a retired lieutenant and paramedic from Chesterfield Fire and EMS, lives near the crash site and was the first to arrive on scene and call 911.
“I was in the house and heard a loud noise,” the veteran rescuer said, “I came outside and there had been a crash.”
Traylor’s training kicked in and he knew exactly what to do. Without protective gear, he put his personal safety aside and climbed into the crashed vehicle to provide aid to an injured occupant while medical personnel and county police were on the way.
Fire and medical personnel from Dale and Airport fire stations along with county police soon arrived.
County police set up a perimeter on the busy road so rescuers could safely work.
Three occupants were transported to a local hospital.
The crash is under investigation.
