Farmer’s market returns: Market organizers hope for large crowd for May 1 opening

Nicole Jordan, founder of the Chester Village Farmer’s Market, knows exactly what she wants to see when the market opens for the season on May 1.

“I want a mob on May 1!” she said. “People can come to the market and meet each other; they can bring their pets. … It’s done just for the community, and that’s all.”

This year’s market, which will be open on the Chester Village Green from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday from May 1 through October, will feature a mix of new and returning food and craft vendors, she said. Along with produce, vendors’ wares will include homemade soap, jewelry, dog treats, plants, breads, “Wacky Snax” and even driftwood creations, Jordan said.

“We’ve got some really good veggie people,” she said. “It’s going to be great. … I hope a lot of people come. People need to keep coming so we can keep growing.”

Starting the market, which is now in its third year, was a no-brainer for Jordan, who grew up in France, where such markets are plentiful.

“I thought it was a great opportunity,” she said. “I don’t understand why there was no market. It’s a very logical thing to have.”

Jordan took her idea to the Chester Community Association, which now operates the market. Members of the CCA volunteer to help Jordan run the market, she said, and the CCA will have children’s activities, including an inflatable, at the May 1 opening.

“We really need the support of the community so the vendors will stay and come back,” she said. “We can’t have one without the other.”

In a recent e-mail, CCA President Mike Sawyer says the market “is quickly becoming an institution in the Village.”

“The CCA would like to thank and recognize Nicole Jordan’s leadership and vision to establish a wonderful weekly event, as well as all the great vendors that participate,” Sawyer says. “Most of all it is Chester’s residents that make it happen.  …  For those that haven’t had a chance to visit yet, I highly recommend it as the premiere Saturday morning family event.”
