Golden Book Emmys

The First Annual Golden Book Emmy celebration recently took place at Ettrick Elementary School. The event was created to promote reading and to celebrate beloved characters of popular books. Students were encouraged to wear a costume from their favorite book.

Support teachers Barbara Newton, Jolin Thomas-Brown, Heidi Richardson, and Vickie Bowers created interest among the students by wearing costumes during the week before the actual celebration. “We wanted the students to be excited about the upcoming event and to begin thinking about different book characters.” said Reading Specialist Barbara Newton.

On Golden Book Emmy night, students and parents were greeted at the front door by a red carpet, paparazzi with flashing cameras, costumed attendants, and admiring “fans”.  All teachers participated alongside hundreds of parents and students in costume. Once inside, the students and parents were entertained by teachers from all grade levels who had written skits and other performances to celebrate favorite books. Students were also recognized for successfully completing Summer Reading and Math Challenges.

The event was very well-received and students loved to see their favorite books come alive. “The Ettrick parents and students were extremely thrilled about the wonderful reading incentives!” said, Reading Specialist Jolin Thomas-Brown   “The Support teachers enjoyed encouraging the Ettrick students in their quest to develop a life-long love of reading!”said, Reading Specialist Heidi Richardson.
