On a recent afternoon at Lucy Corr Village, a crowd gathered to view art works in oils, fabric, wood and other mediums, all with a common theme: Heart.
“Virginia [the state] is an incredible opportunity to teach people case studies in democracy,” said H. Edward “Chip” Mann. “We are open about it [knowing] that we made mistakes. We are not afraid to talk about our mistakes.” Mann, executive director of the Federal Commission for the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission, was a field leader for 20 undergraduate journalism students from Bangladesh, India and SirLanka.
As many students prepared for the final grueling days of the school year, some were treated to a day outside and a chance to give a little back. Recently, about 180 eighth graders, along with teachers and parent volunteers, from Salem Church Middle School took a trip to Pocahontas State Park to participate in a service project to help clean up the park.
They counted, jumped, kicked and swayed to the music. Minds In Motion, an educational initiative of the Richmond Ballet, had nearly 70 fourth-grade students from Hopkins Road Elementary School demonstrate and entertain parents and teachers with a end-of the-year performance on a Wednesday evening at the school.
Several local scholars have been recognized for their academic achievement at colleges and universities in and outside Virginia.
Three Chester residents have been selected as Virginia Tech Hokie Camp counselors, according to information from the school.
Boxing is a sport that you don’t see a great deal of anymore. Most of the premium matches are on premium television channels or must be purchased on a pay-per-view basis. Yet, some of the most famous sports broadcasting calls come from boxing. Many fans will remember Howard Cosell belting out the phrase: “Down goes Frazier, down goes Frazier,” and many remember the explosion boxing had in the 1990s behind “Iron Mike” Tyson and Evander Holyfield.
The 9-10 year olds representing the Matoaca Athletic Association have enjoyed an undefeated regular season, and they took another step toward the championship trophy with a 6-2 victory over Jacobs Road on a recent steamy Saturday afternoon at Harry Daniel Park.
