As the start of the new school year creeps closer, Chesterfield’s newest students – and their parents – are preparing to make the jump from home or preschool to kindergarten.

L. C. Bird student attends summer academy at NASA

Zachary Waller, a student at L.C. Bird High School in Chesterfield, was one of 48 rising high school seniors from across the state selected to take part in the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) academy, according to a press release.

Local baseball star Berkley Hawkins headed to VMI

Berkley Hawkins, a 2010 graduate of Trinity Episcopal, will continue his college career at Virginia Military Institute. Although recruited as a catcher, Hawkins will play behind senior Alex Haitsuka, who is considered a professional prospect. The Keydet’s covet Hawkins’ bat and may move him to third base while he waits his turn behind the plate.

Somehow, everything is better once Ms. B gets involved. For 30 years, she has been the face of cheering at both Thomas Dale and Matoaca, but, more importantly, she is an advocate for kids who are attempting to make it in the world by doing things the right way.

Local athlete selected for national showcase

Brittany Andrews was recently selected to compete in the Queen of Diamonds Showcase East (QDSE) at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., on Aug. 21-22, according to information provided by Donna Andrews.

The Chester Recreation Association continued to flash the unbeatable combination of quantity and quality as it cruised to yet another Chesterfield Aquatic League Championship. Chester easily outpaced Woodland Pond by nearly 500 points in claiming the 2010 title.

CBC Mustangs win Zone Tournament, head to Dallas

Upon completion of the regular season last month, 40 9- and 10-year-olds were selected by the league to try out for all-star competition. Fifteen boys, including three Matoaca youngsters, were selected to represent Chesterfield. Brandon Pond and Ryan Smith have been starters on the squad, while Kyle Williams has been a key reserve.
