The Planning Commission voted last week to defer a request from Shoosmith Bros. Inc., but not before several residents took to the podium to share concerns about the request and complaints about the landfill’s odor.

Robinson wins 27th District seat

Republican Roxann Robinson has won a special election for former state Del. Sam Nixon’s open seat in the 27th House of Delegates District, according to unofficial election results on the Virginia State Board of Elections’ website.

What changes in Chesterfield County on July 1?

When Chesterfield’s next fiscal year begins on Thursday, July 1, a host of services will change as a result of decisions made earlier this year to balance the budget. The Board of Supervisors approved the $701.2 million fiscal 2011 general fund budget in April. At the time, Budget and Management Director Allan Carmody said the expenditures in the budget had been scaled back to be on par with 1995 levels. The spending plan includes the loss of approximately 150 full- and part-time employees.

Former CCPS director of community relations sues schools for age discrimination

Debra Marlow, former Director of Community Relations and Legislative Liaison for Chesterfield County Public Schools (CCPS), has filed a lawsuit in United States Eastern District Court alleging age discrimination by the Superintendent of Schools and the School Board. The suit, filed in January, was considered by United States District Court Judge Robert E. Payne just last week.

CRICKLEWOOD DR 6/14 South Pointe Landing Apartments. The victim had just parked his vehicle and taken trash to the dumpster when one of the suspects approached, asking the time. As the victim reached into his pocked for his cell phone, the second suspect came up from behind and put a choke hold around the victim’s neck. Once the victim fell to the ground, the suspects took his property and walked off.

Students, teachers celebrate Bay Day

Elizabeth Davis Middle School’s students and teachers took a break from their usual end-of-the-year activities to devote a day to exploring and celebrating their connection to the Chesapeake Bay.

Matoaca soccer arises from the ashes

Six years ago Coach Corey McConville arrived to take the reins of the fledgling soccer program at Matoaca Middle School. The team’s history was not a good one, with winless seasons being the norm. McConville’s first Warrior team included 7th graders Dylan Prendergast, Mason Page, and Nathan Calhoun, three players that would give Matoaca a foretaste of things to come.
